I reserve at least one day a month for self care. I sleep more than usual, eat foods I like, watch a movie or TV show, and overall just take the day to focus on myself and what my body and mind need. I am disabled and chronically ill and I deal with chronic fatigue, so having this day to simply rest is important for my body to also be able to recover. I absolutely realize that having the time and ability to do this is a luxury that is not available to a lot of people, and if it is not available to you, that is completely ok. For me, having that day to look forward to helps me get through the hard days in between. My top piece of advice is to listen to what your body needs, not just what your mind needs. I’ve lived with disability, chronic illness, fatigue, and significant chronic pain since I was in elementary school and if there is one thing that has taught me, it is that the state of your body affects the state of your mind. When I am in more pain than usual, hungry, thirsty, or overly tired, it takes a toll on my mental health. I know it seems cliché and you’ve probably heard it before, but even just doing things like eating, drinking, and sleeping to fulfill your body’s basic needs really do make a difference.
