Why is life so easy for people on social media?

I am sick and tired of seeing normal people on social media like Instagram show off photos of graduating from a fancy university, getting hitched, buying a house, and starting a family as if it’s all a walk in the park. What about those of us facing challenges, disabilities, health issues, or just not having the same luck in life?

Think of people’s social media as a highlight reel of their life. They’re just posting the best bits, and leaving all the mundane/negative stuff out. It would be illogical to compare your un-filtered, whole life to someone else’s highlight reel. I get that it’s easier said than done, though.

I came off all social media because comparing myself to others was bringing me down, but you can always unfollow accounts that make you feel bad.

Social media isn’t an accurate representation of people’s lives. I post the happy things in my life, I don’t post the horrible things.

I knew in theory that social media isn’t an accurate depiction of people’s entire lives when I first got social media, but I don’t think I fully understood that until I started working for someone with a pretty large social media following. I was reviewing her emails, dms, and helping her manage things and I truly began to see that what she posted to social media was not the whole story. The whole story would have been too personal for her to share on social media, and there was a lot of not great stuff that I was seeing and she was going through, but most of her followers never would have known. As someone with a disability who has also struggled with mental illness, I definitely understand the difficulty of seeing people living these seemingly perfect lives on social media, but trust me, there’s a lot you don’t see. Hope this helps.
