I believe people turn away out of fear. You can get used to being alone, but losing the security of someone who makes you feel safe is heartbreaking. Ultimately, we can’t mourn the loss of something we never had. At least, that’s how I see it.
Being with people who are sensitive to your emotions can make it even more difficult. Instead of confronting your own struggles, you end up expending a lot of energy pretending to be okay to shield them from pain. Giving or receiving love can feel like a heavy burden.
